The Setting

The Via Lattea is a winter sports area straddling the French-Italian border. Better known to the British as the Milky Way, the Via Lattea covers all the skiing in Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx, San Sicario, Claviere and Montgenèvre and is the biggest ski area in the Susa Valley with some 400 km of slopes. Situated at the far end of the Milky Way ski area we find Sestriere.

Placed just above the treeline, Sestriere is one of the highest resorts in Italy at 2035m elevation, which guarantees wonderful snow conditions and a fun-filled ski holiday. A well established ski resort village thanks to its use during the Winter Olympics in 2006, Sestriere has a modern and trendy feel that has a wide variety of apres-ski activities, a fantastic offering of traditional Italian cuisine and is an enviable doorway to a snow white paradise.

The Skiing

The ski school is relaxed and friendly, the main nursery slopes are almost opposite the hotel, which offers magic carpets and a couple of button lifts paired with some gently sloped Blues to ease your way in to becoming a skier.

Those more accomplished skiers can explore the Via Lattea with some 400kms of varied pistes on the Italian side of the system, with a six day ski pass you also get a one day pass to visit Montgenèvre on the French side of the system. Sestriere also offers nighttime skiing on the same floodlit runs as skied by the pros during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

The Accommodation

Designed by the world famous architect, Renzo Piano, the Hotel du Col is a modern structure and is perfectly placed almost opposite the ski slopes, yet also moments from the centre of the village. A stay here means first dibs on the slopes each morning and doorstep access to the Milky Way's 400km of piste.

The hotel's interior has recently had a makeover, resulting in rooms that are modern but cosy, with stylish touches like wooden floors and panelling, with pops of colour to lend them a real alpine feel. The rooms all have their own private facilities and offer a wide variety of bed configurations so it is well suited to family and school groups. There is a cosy Lounge Bar - perfect for relaxing in after a energetic day spent conquering the slopes - which not only hosts the daily afternoon tea and cake but also fantastic panoramic mountain views.

The hotel provides a delicious sweet and savoury buffet breakfast every morning with a huge range of delights ensuring that you are fully energised and ready for the day ahead, and in the evening, the hotel's restaurant serves up mouth-watering regional and Italian specialities so that not tummy is left rumbling.

With its friendly staff, fantastic food, perfect location and excellent TripAdvisor reviews, this certainly ticks all the boxes for an unforgettable trip.
